2010 International Year of Biodiversity
The General Assembly of the United Nations has declared 2010 “International Year of Biodiversity” for highlight global environmental issue of impoverishment of the planet following the destruction of habitats and ecosystems.
2010 marks for Italy a particularly important moment for the establishment of the National Strategy for Biodiversity, through which integrate the needs of biodiversity with the development and implementation of national sectoral policies and define the vision for biodiversity conservation in next decade.
Since the adoption in 1992 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the awareness that biodiversity is a source of goods, resources and ecosystem services essential to the survival and welfare of humanity, have resulted from commitments to political part of many heads of state who helped during the World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002, the detection of so-called 2010 target, consistent, globally, in “achieving a significant reduction in the rate loss of biodiversity, and pan-European and European Union, “in stopping the loss of biodiversity.”
The actual results show how much remains to be done despite efforts in the field and success in many areas.
In March 2010, the EU Environment Council adopted conclusions that extend the timeframe and action plan within 2020 to halt biodiversity loss and degradation of ecosystem services and, wherever feasible, restore them, agreeing also a long-term vision for the protection of species in the EU 2050.
